DENPASAR – The Open Doctoral Promotion Examination for the Doctoral Program in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (FK UNUD), has produced another new graduate. On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Ni Putu Widya Astuti, S.Si., M.Si., successfully defended her dissertation and officially received her doctorate.

This achievement came after the promotion went through an intensive study process and was declared successful in the Phase I Final Examination (Closed Examination) on November 25, 2025. In this open examination, she presented research focused on innovative natural-based therapies, entitled:

"Mechanism of the Effects of Nanoparticles of Sembung Leaf Extract (Blumea balsamifera L.) on Levels of Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha, Interleukin 6, Nuclear Factor Kappa B, and Pancreatic Beta Cell Count in Wistar Rats Fed a High-Fructose and Fat Diet."

The Open Defense Session

The defense session proceeded solemnly through three stages: the dissertation presentation, a question-and-answer session with the promoter and opposing teams, and a question-and-answer session with invited academics. The examination board's assessment focused on the depth of scientific reasoning and the research's contribution to elucidating the molecular mechanisms of sedge leaf extract as a therapeutic agent for metabolic conditions.

This research was conducted under the guidance of the following promoter team:

Promoter: Prof. Dr. Ir. Ida Bagus Putra Manuaba, M.Phil

Co-promoter I: Prof. Dr. dr. I Made Sudarmaja, M.Kes

Co-promoter II: Dr. Anak Agung Bawa Putra, S.Si., M.Si

The dissertation candidate's ability to defend their scientific arguments was also rigorously tested by seven opposing teams and five experts from various disciplines as invited academics.

Conferment of Degree

Following a final meeting that considered academic achievement, research diligence, and the dissertation defense method, the chair of the defense decided that the dissertation was accepted and the dissertation was declared PASSED.

With this success, Ni Putu Widya Astuti, S.Si., M.Si., was officially inaugurated as the 486th Doctor in the Doctoral Program in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University.

"Starting today, you are granted the right to use the title of Doctor with all the rights, obligations, and honors that come with it. On behalf of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, we congratulate Dr. Ni Putu Widya Astuti, S.Si., M.Si., on today's success," concluded the chairperson.
